Pulwama,(DD):Panic gripped the Government Girls Higher Secondary School (GGHSS) in Khrew on Monday after a chemical reaction during a routine laboratory experiment caused toxic fumes to spread, leaving 15 students unconscious and several others in distress.
The incident occurred during a chemistry practical session when a container of acid reportedly reacted unexpectedly, releasing fumes that quickly filled the laboratory, triggering chaos among the students.
Eyewitnesses said several students collapsed on the spot, while others experienced breathing difficulties and panic attacks.
The affected students were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for emergency care. Some of the more serious cases were later referred to SMHS Hospital in Srinagar for specialized treatment. All students are reported to be in stable condition.
Block Medical Officer Pampore, Dr. Yusuf, confirmed that 15 students were impacted. “They were promptly shifted to the hospital, and all of them are now stable,” he said.
Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, Basharat Qayoom, said that a detailed inquiry has been initiated. “A magistrate and the Tehsildar are at the site, verifying the facts surrounding the incident,” he added.
Authorities are expected to review laboratory safety protocols at the school and across other educational institutions to prevent such incidents in the future(DD)
