Ghulam Nabi Azad calls Waqf Bill to prioritize community welfare, transparency

Diplomat Desk

Jammu, (DD)Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has stressed that the proposed Waqf Bill should be crafted with the primary aim of benefiting the community for which the Waqf system was originally established.

Speaking on the ongoing discussions surrounding the Bill, Azad pointed out that the reform should focus on the welfare of the Muslim community in Jammu and Kashmir, ensuring that Waqf properties serve their intended purpose of supporting education, healthcare, and social upliftment.

Azad’s remarks came amid growing concerns regarding the management and utilization of Waqf assets, which have long been a subject of debate in the region. He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the administration of these properties, advocating for stringent measures to prevent mismanagement. Furthermore, he called for the effective use of the income generated from Waqf properties to fund community development initiatives, rather than allowing these assets to be exploited for personal or political gain.

His call highlights the importance of ensuring that any changes to the Waqf system directly contribute to community empowerment and socio-economic development in J&K(DD)
