JU organizes gender sensitization workshop

Jammu, DD: The Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu organized a gender sensitisation workshop for the P.G Students and scholars of the Department of Education, University of Jammu.

Prof. Rajiv Ratan Sharma, Head, Department of Education, University of Jammu, welcomed all the participants and congratulated the Centre for organising such a workshop on such an important issue. He emphasised that within educational institutions, everyone should function as a unified group, and in society, all tasks are carried out in partnership, so work should be recognised regardless of gender. He stressed that gender equality must be an integral part of society. To illustrate his point, he cited the example of household chores, which are largely performed by women, and highlighted the need for shared responsibility and the recognition of women’s contributions.

Prof. Savita Nayyar, Director of the Centre for Women’s Studies, was the key speaker at the event, where she discussed on the theme: “Gender Sensitization and Women’s Equality”. In her presentation, she addressed various gender-related challenges, emphasizing the societal positioning of women as a result of deeply ingrained patriarchal structures that need transformation. Prof. Nayyar highlighted the critical importance of understanding how socialization influences attitudes and behaviours towards gender, explaining that individual socialisation plays a vital role in shaping perceptions of gender. She pointed out that this perception is molded through a combination of inherent tendencies, learned behaviors, cultural norms, and personal experiences. Further, she elaborated on the various constitutional provisions and legal safeguards available for women in particular.

A large number of faculty members and students very enthusiastically participated in the workshop and asked various questions, which were answered to their satisfaction. Dr. Kajal Manhas, Dr. Sheetal Sharma, Dr. Upasana Sharma and Dr. Ana Bali, faculty, members, Department of Education were also present.Ms. Kunzang Angmo conducted and coordinated the program and Dr. Saranjit Kaur presented the formal vote of thanks, both faculty members from the Centre for Women’s Studies.DD
