Srinagar,(DD) In a unique move, traders in Srinagar’s bustling Lal Chowk have erected signboards urging tourists to respect local traditions and family values by avoiding alcohol, drugs, and smoking.
The initiative, which has drawn mixed reactions, highlights growing concerns about cultural preservation and substance abuse in Jammu and Kashmir.
The signboards, prominently displayed at key locations in Lal Chowk, read: “Tourists are requested to uphold family values. Say no to liquor, drugs, and smoking.” Traders and shopkeepers say the move is aimed at maintaining the social and moral fabric of the region, which has long been known for its conservative ethos.
“We welcome tourists with open arms, but we also want them to respect our culture and traditions. Alcohol and drug consumption are against our values, and we believe this message will create awareness,” said a trader from the area.
While alcohol is not completely banned in Jammu and Kashmir, its availability is restricted to select government-run outlets, hotels, and licensed establishments. However, social and religious sensitivities often make liquor consumption a contentious issue in the region.
The traders’ move comes amid rising concerns over substance abuse in the Valley, with recent reports highlighting an increase in drug addiction cases, particularly among the youth. Authorities have been stepping up anti-drug campaigns, and the Srinagar administration has taken several measures to curb the spread of narcotics.
The initiative has received support from several local organizations and residents who believe that promoting a drug-free environment will benefit both locals and visitors. However, some voices in the tourism sector worry that such messaging might discourage certain travelers, particularly those from outside the region.
A tourism industry insider, speaking anonymously, said, “Jammu and Kashmir thrives on tourism, and while it is important to maintain cultural values, we should also ensure that such moves do not create an impression that tourists are unwelcome.”
Authorities have not yet commented on the development, but the move has sparked conversations about the delicate balance between cultural preservation and tourism promotion in Jammu and Kashmir.
With tourism playing a crucial role in the region’s economy, it remains to be seen how this initiative will influence visitor behavior and whether similar campaigns will emerge in other parts of the Valley(DD)
