Diplomat Correspondent

Srinagar, Feb 22(DD): The globally renowned handicrafts and handloom industry of Kashmir has achieved exports worth Rs 2,567 crore over the past two financial years and the first three quarters of the current fiscal. Despite facing setbacks due to global conflicts, the sector remains a key contributor to the region’s economy.According to the Handicrafts and Handloom Department, Kani and Sozni shawls led exports with a total value of Rs 1,105 crore, while hand-knotted carpets accounted for Rs 728 crore. Other products such as crewel, papier-mâché, chain stitch, and wood carving also contributed significantly. To further support exporters, the department has introduced a 10% incentive scheme, with a maximum reimbursement of Rs 5 crore for eligible registered exporters. Additionally, the government has strengthened the Pashmina Testing and Quality Certification Centre (PTQCC) and IICT carpet lab to ensure authenticity through QR coding and testing, significantly reducing the backlog of certification requests. The administration is also focusing on artisan welfare, with initiatives such as the Credit Card Scheme, Mudra loans, financial assistance for cooperatives, and scholarships for artisans’ children. Under the National Wool Policy, 100 modern steel carpet looms have been distributed to weavers, with plans for 250 more next year.In a significant push for skill development, over 17,000 women have been trained in various crafts across 432 training centers in the last four years, with Rs 36.27 crore disbursed as stipends. The government aims to connect these artisans with master craftsmen under the Karkhandar Scheme to enhance their market reach and earnings. With a strong focus on innovation, quality certification, and artisan welfare, Kashmir’s handicraft sector is poised for sustainable growth, despite external economic challenges.(DD)
