Winter vacations extended till March 7 in Kashmir after fresh Snowfall

Diplomat Correspondent

Srinagar, (DD): The Jammu and Kashmir government has extended winter vacations for schools in the Kashmir division and winter zones of Jammu till March 7, 2025, following fresh snowfall and severe cold conditions.

An official order issued by the School Education Department confirmed the extension, stating that all government and recognized private schools up to the higher secondary level will now reopen on March 8, 2025 instead of March 1.

Harsh Weather Triggers Extension

Kashmir witnessed a fresh spell of moderate to heavy snowfall over the past few days, leading to disruptions in road connectivity and a further drop in temperatures. The decision to extend vacations was taken to ensure the safety of students amid inclement weather.

A senior education department official said, “The extension was necessary given the current weather conditions. Many areas, especially in north Kashmir and higher reaches, are still covered in snow, making travel difficult for students.”

Parents and Students React

The announcement has received mixed reactions from students and parents. While many welcomed the move, others expressed concerns about further academic delays.

Suhail Ahmad, a parent from Baramulla, said, “Safety is a priority, and given the snowfall, it’s a wise decision. However, schools must plan remedial classes to compensate for the lost academic time.”

Meanwhile, Aaliya Jan, a Class 12 student, noted, “We are already behind schedule due to frequent disruptions. Online classes or extra sessions should be arranged to cover the syllabus.”

No Change in Jammu Summer Zone Schedule

The extension applies only to the Kashmir valley and winter zones of Jammu. Schools in the summer zones of Jammu division will reopen as per their original schedule.

With temperatures expected to improve in the coming weeks, the administration hopes for a smooth resumption of academic activities once schools reopen on March 8.(DD)
