Govt Considering Tourism Development Authority for Gurez to Boost Infrastructure: CM Omar

Diplomat Correspondent

Jammu, (DD): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday announced that the government is actively considering the establishment of a Tourism Development Authority (TDA) for Gurez to enhance its tourism potential, improve infrastructure, and promote the valley as a major travel destination.

Speaking during a session in the Legislative Assembly, Omar emphasized that Jammu and Kashmir has gained recognition as one of the country’s favorite tourist destinations, attracting a record number of visitors in recent years. He highlighted the rising popularity of Gurez Valley, which has emerged as an offbeat tourist spot.

“In 2022, Gurez Valley was recognized with the ‘Best Destination Award,’ acknowledging its unique charm and natural beauty. Further, in September 2023, Dawar village in Gurez received the ‘Best Tourism Village’ award in the gold category from the Union Ministry of Tourism. This recognition highlights the region’s cultural richness and tourism potential,” Omar stated.

To further develop Gurez as a prime travel destination, the Jammu and Kashmir government has already launched several initiatives. Omar pointed out that commercial rafting was introduced in Gurez for the first time in 2024, offering adventure tourism opportunities to visitors. Additionally, under the 2024-25 Capex Budget, the Tourism Department has prioritized the upgradation of Gurez, focusing on infrastructure development, eco-tourism, and improving local amenities.

The Chief Minister stressed that while Gurez has enormous tourism potential, a dedicated Tourism Development Authority would help in better planning and execution of projects to attract more visitors while ensuring sustainable development. “The Tourism Department will assess the need for setting up a Tourism Development Authority for Gurez to enhance facilities, create employment opportunities, and provide sustainable economic growth for local communities,” he added.

Omar also assured that the government remains committed to expanding tourism beyond traditional destinations like Gulmarg and Pahalgam, ensuring that lesser-explored regions like Gurez receive the attention and investment they deserve.(DD)
