Billawar,(DD) People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti on Monday visited Billawar in Kathua district, where recent civilian killings have sparked outrage and political protests. She met with the families of the victims and demanded a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident.
Expressing her condolences, Iltija criticized the administration for its handling of the situation and accused the government of failing to ensure public safety. “The loss of innocent lives is unacceptable, and those responsible must be held accountable. The people of Billawar deserve justice, not silence,” she said while addressing the media.
Her visit comes amid heightened political tensions, with opposition parties, including the National Conference (NC) and Congress, demanding a discussion in the Assembly over the killings. However, the Speaker ruled out the debate, citing legal constraints.
Iltija also questioned the government’s approach to handling protests and dissent, emphasizing the need for transparency in the ongoing inquiry. “Suppressing voices will not help. The government must ensure accountability and take corrective measures to prevent such incidents in the future,” she added.
The PDP leader’s visit is expected to add pressure on the administration, as calls for justice continue to grow from various political and civil society groups across Jammu and Kashmir.(DD)
