Staff Shortage at SKIMS a Growing Concern, Govt Assures Recruitment Drive

Diplomat Correspondent

Srinagar, (DD): The Jammu and Kashmir government has acknowledged the staff shortage at SKIMS Soura as a major challenge amid a rising patient load in both Outpatient (OPD) and Inpatient (IPD) departments. Authorities assured that steps are being taken to address the issue by expediting the recruitment process.

Responding to a query raised by MLA Tanvir Sadiq in the Assembly, Health and Medical Education (H&ME) Minister Sakina Itoo stated that while SKIMS Soura continues to handle an increasing number of patients daily, staff shortages remain a pressing concern.

“The issue has been raised with the concerned recruitment agencies. Additionally, the H&ME Department has recently notified the SKIMS Recruitment Rules 2025 (S.O 29 dated 23.01.2025), which will facilitate staff promotions and create fresh vacancies at the entry level,” she said.

To address the growing demand for medical services, the government is also focusing on expanding healthcare infrastructure, particularly at SMHS Hospital in Srinagar, which caters to nearly 3,500 patients daily. Several key projects are currently under construction, including:

Theatre Block (Rs 50.24 crore)

30-Bed ENT Block (Rs 4.99 crore)

Upgradation of Medical Casualty (Rs 2.99 crore)

Triage and Lift Augmentation Plans

These projects aim to enhance facilities by adding an 18-bed High Dependency (HD) Ward, 37 pre/post-operative wards, Blood Bank, Gas Bank, and essential drug stores.

At JLNM Hospital, a new G+4 additional block is being developed to accommodate the rising patient influx, with completion expected soon. The hospital has also recently installed a CT scan facility, and efforts are being made to fill vacant paramedical positions through the National Health Mission (NHM).

The government reiterated its commitment to strengthening healthcare services and ensuring better medical facilities for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.(DD)
