Jammu, (DD): Despite a vast hydropower potential of 14,867 megawatts, Jammu and Kashmir has managed to harness only 3,540 MWs, significantly underutilizing its clean energy resources. Of this, the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has developed the largest share, contributing 2,250 MWs.

The J&K Government, in response to a query in the Legislative Assembly, confirmed that the Union Territory’s total estimated hydropower potential stands at 18,000 MWs, with 14,867 MWs officially identified.

Breakdown of Hydropower Potential:

Chenab Valley: 11,283 MWs

Jhelum Basin: 3,084 MWs

Ravi Basin: 500 MWs

Current Power Generation:

NHPC (Central Sector): 2,250 MWs

J&K State Power Development Corporation (UT Sector): 1,197.4 MWs
