Orange Alert Issued for Kargil: Authorities Warn of Avalanche Risk

Kargil: (DD) A Level Three (Orange) avalanche warning has been issued for Kargil district by the Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE), Chandigarh, cautioning residents about possible snow slides in the coming hours. The warning remains valid from March 27 to March 28, 2025.

As fresh snowfall and fluctuating temperatures increase the risk of avalanches, authorities have urged people living in high-risk areas to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.

The district administration has activated emergency response mechanisms, placing rescue teams and disaster management units on high alert. Local police, SDRF, and BRO personnel have been instructed to monitor vulnerable areas and assist in case of any emergencies.

“Residents, particularly in avalanche-prone zones, should stay indoors, stock up on essentials, and avoid venturing into snow-covered slopes,” said an official from the Kargil Disaster Management Authority.

For many remote villages in Drass, Batalik, and Zanskar, the risk is particularly high due to steep terrain and heavy snow accumulation. Mohammad Hussain, a resident of Drass, expressed concern about the situation: “With such warnings, we fear being cut off. We rely on local authorities to keep us informed and safe.”

Authorities are closely monitoring weather updates, and medical teams are on standby. BRO personnel have been directed to keep key roads clear, while Indian Army units stationed in the region are prepared to assist in relief efforts if required.

The DGRE, which specializes in avalanche risk assessment, regularly issues alerts based on weather patterns, snow accumulation, and terrain analysis. A Level Three (Orange) alert indicates a significant avalanche threat, particularly in steep and high-altitude areas.

Residents are advised to stay updated through official government advisories, avoid traveling to avalanche-prone zones, and report any emergencies to local authorities. With timely precautions and coordinated efforts, officials aim to minimize risks and ensure public safety.

As Kargil braces for potential snow slides, the resilience of its people and the preparedness of local agencies will be key in tackling this natural challenge.(DD)
