Mysterious Pakistani Balloons Spotted in Poonch: Security Agencies on Alert

Nazim Ali Manhas

Poonch, (DD)A wave of curiosity and mild security concerns swept through Poonch district today as two separate Pakistani balloons were discovered in different locations. While both were found to be non-suspicious, their appearance has raised eyebrows, given the history of similar incidents in border areas.

First Sighting at Shahpur Burst Bus Stop

Earlier in the day, residents near Shahpur Burst Bus Stop in Tehsil Haveli noticed an unusual object drifting in the sky before it landed near the roadside. Upon closer inspection, the object turned out to be a balloon shaped like an aeroplane with Pakistani markings. Local authorities were promptly informed, and a police team from Poonch Police Station rushed to the spot. After a thorough check, no suspicious material was found, and officials classified it as a non-threatening object.

Second Sighting in Balakote

Not long after the Shahpur incident, another similar balloon was spotted in Behroot, Balakote, landing on agricultural land belonging to Mohd Hafeez, son of Dost Mohd. As news of the first sighting had already spread, villagers were quick to report this second discovery. Once again, security forces were deployed, and after an inspection, the balloon was declared harmless.

Pattern or Mere Coincidence?

The arrival of multiple balloons from across the border on the same day has led to speculation among security agencies and locals. While such incidents have occurred before, particularly in regions close to the Line of Control (LoC), they are often dismissed as pranks or harmless objects carried by the wind. However, authorities do not take these occurrences lightly.

In the past, Pakistani balloons carrying messages or propaganda material have been found in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir, leading to brief security alerts. Although today’s balloons had no visible inscriptions or attachments, intelligence agencies are likely to analyse the situation further to rule out any hidden motives.

Public Urged to Stay Vigilant

In light of these discoveries, security officials have urged residents to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious objects they come across. “Even if such balloons seem harmless, it is always best to notify the authorities so that proper checks can be conducted,” said a senior police official from Poonch.

While today’s incidents may ultimately prove to be harmless, they serve as a reminder of the heightened security sensitivities in the border regions of Jammu and Kashmir. With tensions often fluctuating along the LoC, even a drifting balloon can sometimes carry more than just air—it carries questions, curiosity, and the ever-present need for caution.(DD)
