Srinagar, (DD) Kashmir is witnessing an unusual spell of heat, with Srinagar recording a scorching 30.4°C on Monday — the second-highest maximum temperature ever recorded in April for the summer capital.

Director of the Meteorological Department, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, said that multiple areas across the Valley experienced temperatures 8 to 11°C above normal. Other key stations also saw significant spikes: Qazigund recorded 29.8°C (its third highest in April), Pahalgam 25.4°C, Kupwara 29.5°C, Kukernag 27.5°C, and Gulmarg 20.7°C.

In the Jammu division, Jammu city recorded 35.7°C, while Banihal stood at 25.8°C, Batote 24.1°C, Katra 32.4°C, and Bhaderwah 26.4°C.

While the weather is expected to remain dry across Jammu and Kashmir till April 17, the MET department has forecast a fresh spell of rain and snow beginning the evening of April 18.

“From April 18 to 20, light to moderate rain and snow are likely in most areas, especially over the higher reaches. Some places may witness moderate to heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunder and gusty winds,” Dr. Mukhtar said.

Cloudy weather with isolated rain or thunder is also expected on April 21, while the period between April 22 and 25 is likely to remain mostly dry. Another brief wet spell may return between April 26 and 27.

Authorities have urged tourists, travellers, and transporters to plan accordingly and stay updated with official advisories. Farmers have been advised to continue agricultural activities until April 17, before the wet spell sets in.

The MET office also warned of potential landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas during the rainy period.(DD)
