Irfan Pathan Launches Cricket League in Srinagar: “Kashmir’s Youth Have Fire, Need the Right Platform”

Diplomat Correspondent

Srinagar, (DD): Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan on Thursday said that Kashmir’s youth possess imm1ense passion for cricket, but often lack consistent opportunities and proper infrastructure to thrive.

Speaking at the launch of the EPIC Victory Cricket League (EVCL) in Srinagar, Pathan said the new initiative aims to bridge that gap and bring raw, local talent into the spotlight.

“I’ve seen it firsthand – a left-arm pacer from Kupwara, boys from Baramulla… they have the fire. What’s missing is exposure and proper training,” he remarked during a press conference at Hotel Radisson.

Pathan emphasized that the EVCL will serve as a much-needed platform for aspiring cricketers, not just from Jammu & Kashmir, but also from other states like Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. The league will feature a mix of emerging players and seasoned domestic cricketers, creating space for mentorship and learning.

“This is not just a tournament; it’s a platform to change lives,” he said.

Highlighting the infrastructural challenges, Pathan noted that many districts in Kashmir still rely on matting wickets. “Turf wickets are essential if we want to prepare players for national-level competitions,” he added.

He also praised the rise of female cricketers in the region, calling it an inspiring sign of ambition and dedication among the youth, regardless of gender.

Having worked closely with cricketers in the region during his tenure with the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA), Pathan reiterated that the hunger for cricket in the Valley runs deep—even in its remotest corners( DD)
