Srinagar,(DD): Former Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti on today led a silent protest in Srinagar, expressing anguish and sorrow over the deadly Pahalgam attack that left 26 civilians dead—most of them tourists from other parts of India.

Addressing reporters during the demonstration, Mufti described the incident as a “cowardly and shameful act” that not only targeted innocent lives but also struck at the very core of Kashmir’s centuries-old tradition of hospitality and harmony.

“This is not just an attack on tourists, it’s an attack on Kashmiriyat. People from across the country visit us to experience peace and beauty—what happened yesterday is deeply painful. I want to say to every Indian citizen: we are ashamed. Kashmir is ashamed,” she said.

Visibly emotional, Mehbooba offered an apology to the people of India on behalf of Kashmiris. “This act does not represent who we are. I apologise to the entire nation. The people of Kashmir are grieving with you.”

She also urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is currently in the Valley, to ensure the perpetrators are swiftly identified and punished. “The culprits must be brought to justice without delay. Those who did this must not be allowed to escape,” she added.

The protest ended with a moment of silence observed by PDP leaders and supporters in memory of the victims.(DD)
