J&K Government Suspends Mobile Internet in Bhaderwah Amid Security Concerns

Diplomat Correspondent

Bhaderwah, (DD)The Jammu and Kashmir government has temporarily suspended mobile internet services in parts of Bhaderwah, Doda district, citing apprehensions of potential misuse by anti-national elements that could disrupt public order.

The suspension, in effect from 8 PM on May 22 until 8 PM on May 27, impacts 37 mobile towers—19 operated by Reliance Jio and 18 by Airtel. The move follows a recommendation from Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu Zone, Bhim Sen Tuti.

An official order issued by Principal Secretary (Home) Chandraker Bharti notes that mobile data services (2G/3G/4G/5G) and public Wi-Fi could be exploited to spread misinformation and incite unrest, thereby threatening communal harmony.

The government underlined that the suspension is a preventive measure, undertaken in the interest of the sovereignty and integrity of the country, the security of the Union Territory, and to maintain public order.

This action comes in the backdrop of earlier incidents in Bhaderwah, where objectionable social media posts triggered protests and partial shutdowns, leading authorities to implement similar curbs to contain the situation and prevent escalation.

Residents have been urged to stay updated through official channels and to cooperate with law enforcement agencies. Updates on the restoration of services will be communicated as the situation develops.(DD)
