Vande Bharat Express Poised to Boost Tourism in J&K, Say Experts

Srinagar, (DD): The recent launch of the Vande Bharat Express between Katra and Srinagar is being hailed as a transformative move for Jammu & Kashmir’s tourism sector, with stakeholders and experts predicting a major revival in tourist footfall, especially during off-peak and winter seasons.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the train on June 6, calling it the “biggest gift” to the people of Jammu & Kashmir. The semi-high-speed train connects the holy town of Katra with the summer capital Srinagar in under three hours, cutting travel time nearly in half and offering a comfortable alternative to the often treacherous road journey.

Reliable, Round-the-Year Travel

Equipped with state-of-the-art features such as heated windshields, anti-freeze braking systems, and advanced vacuum toilets, the train is built to withstand the harsh winter conditions of the Valley. This, officials say, will allow year-round operations—even in snowbound months when road and air connectivity often gets disrupted.

“Earlier, travel during December to February was extremely limited due to snowfall and closed roads,” said Aamir Hameed, a tourism officer in Srinagar. “With Vande Bharat, we’re expecting a significant boost in winter tourism to destinations like Gulmarg and Pahalgam.”

Affordable Option for Middle-Class Tourists

Airfares to Kashmir often skyrocket during tourist seasons, pricing out many budget travelers. The Vande Bharat Express offers a far more affordable alternative, with fares expected to stay under ₹2,000–₹3,000.

“This will democratize tourism in the region,” said Farooq Shah, a veteran tour operator. “People who could not afford flights can now travel in comfort and safety.”

Ripple Effects on Local Economy

The tourism boom is also expected to benefit the local economy. From hotel owners and taxi drivers to street vendors and artisans, the entire service chain stands to gain.

“The surge in tourist traffic will rejuvenate the hospitality and handicrafts sectors,” said Tahir Hussain, president of the Kashmir Hotel and Restaurant Association. “We’re also preparing special packages to align with the new train schedule.”

National Push for Promotion

In a further bid to capitalize on this opportunity, the Travel Agents Association of India is hosting a four-day travel expo in Srinagar from June 13 to 16, bringing operators fro2m across the country to explore business partnerships and promote Kashmir as a year-round destination.

The Bottom Line

With better affordability, drastically reduced travel time, and winter-ready engineering, the Vande Bharat Express is widely seen as a game-changer for Jammu & Kashmir’s tourism sector. Industry insiders, policymakers, and local businesses are optimistic that this infrastructure leap will not only revive tourism but also offer economic stability to thousands dependent on it.

“This is not just a train,” said Altaf Bukhari, a local businessman in Baramulla. “It’s a symbol of hope—for travel, for trade, and for a better tomorrow.” (DD)
