Srinagar/Jammu: (DD): The ongoing heatwave showed no signs of relenting on Wednesday, as temperatures soared across Jammu and Kashmir. Srinagar recorded a searing 34.2°C, making it one of the hottest days of the season in the Valley, while Jammu continued to swelter at a blazing 43.6°C.
According to the Meteorological Department, this is the fifth consecutive day of above-normal temperatures in many parts of the Union Territory. The intense heat is being attributed to the prevailing dry continental winds and absence of any significant western disturbance.
“This kind of prolonged heat spell in Srinagar is unusual for early June. The temperatures are 5–6 degrees above the normal average,” said Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Department. He added that there may be slight respite in the form of light rain after June 14.
In Jammu, the relentless sun forced most residents indoors during peak hours. The maximum temperature hovered close to the 44°C mark, prompting health authorities to renew their heat safety advisory. Schools in several districts have already curtailed outdoor activities to protect children from heat stress.
The heatwave has also triggered concerns over water scarcity and electricity load in several urban areas. Residents in parts of Srinagar and Jammu have reported erratic power cuts and low water pressure, exacerbating public discomfort.
Health experts have urged people to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor work during midday hours, and wear light, breathable clothing. Authorities are also on alert to provide emergency response in case of heatstroke or related illnesses.
