Nam Suru- Emerging destination for adventure tourism in the Kargil

Nam Suru village in suru valley is emerging as upcoming hub for paragliding, marking a significant step in the region's efforts to expand adventure tourism.

Kargil, DD, Nam Suru village in suru valley is emerging as upcoming hub for paragliding, marking a significant step in the region’s efforts to expand adventure tourism.
Series of successful trial flights conducted by the Kargil Tourism Development Authority and Tourism department Kargil.

Considering the region’s natural beauty landscape and scope for paragliding, the Deputy Commissioner of Kargil had visited the area to check feasibility and potential. After feasibility check, sufficient resources allocation were ensured to promote adventure tourism in Suru Valley.Local youth were provided with training in paragliding, and equipment was procured for the activity.

Acting on the directive of the Deputy Commissioner, Assistant Director Tourism Kargil, Mohd Ali Tak, and Accounts Officer Shamim Wazir visited Nam Suru to oversee the trial. Accompanied by experienced pilot Mr. Stanzin, the team assessed the terrain, which was confirmed to be suitable and safe for paragliding. This marked the fifth successful trial in the area, reinforcing its potential for adventure sports.

As part of the initiative, paragliding equipment was officially handed by the Tourism Development Authority, Kargil. The move fulfilled a prior commitment made by the DC Kargil to empower local stakeholders in promoting tourism.

The UT Ladakh Administration and the Kargil District Administration believe that the promotion of tourism will enhance employment opportunities for the local population. “Accordingly, this initiative has been taken to promote adventure tourism in Suru Valley, which is expected to become a prominent tourist attraction in the near future,” said Accounts Officer Shamim Wazir.

AD Tourism Mohd Ali Tak reiterated the department’s vision to transform Suru Valley into a hub for adventure tourism. He urged the local community to support sustainable tourism practices and to collaborate with authorities to preserve ecological balance while improving visitor experiences.

Councillor Aga Ainul Huda expressed his appreciation for the initiative and noted its timely importance ahead of the upcoming Suru Fest. The festival is expected to feature international paragliders, with the newly introduced activity set to be one of its key attractions.DD
