Srinagar, (DD): Amid an ongoing heatwave, Srinagar city witnessed an unprecedented rise in nighttime temperatures, recording a minimum of 25.0°C — the highest ever for the month of June in the region’s recorded history.

As per data compiled by Kashmir Weather, this marks the first time the mercury has remained so high during the night in June. Notably, this temperature is close to the average daytime high normally recorded in late May.

The average daytime temperature in Srinagar currently stands at 29.2°C, indicating that early morning hours are now feeling like peak afternoon heat.

The popular tourist destination Pahalgam also reported its highest ever June night temperature, with the mercury settling at 18.8°C.

For the past three weeks, Jammu and Kashmir has been reeling under an intense heatwave, prompting the government to announce early summer vacations for schools and colleges across the Union Territory.

Weather experts have linked the abnormal rise in temperatures to shifting climate patterns and warn of increased frequency of extreme weather events in the region.(DD)
