Mysterious Disease Kills 16 Cattle in Brayan Village of Warwan; Dozens More Critically Ill

Warwan (Kishtwar), (DD): A mysterious illness has claimed the lives of at least 16 domestic cattle in Brayan village of Warwan valley in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, with over 35 more animals reported to be “critically ill.”

The outbreak has triggered alarm among the local residents who rely heavily on livestock for their livelihood.

According to villagers, the disease has spread rapidly in Brayan and neighbouring hamlets, affecting livestock without any known cause. Locals say the situation is worsening by the day.

“We have already lost 16 animals in Brayan. Many others are very sick. This has left the entire village in shock,” said Farooq Ahmed Hajam, a local resident. Similar cases are now being seen in nearby areas too, and we fear it may spread further.

The villagers have appealed to the authorities to immediately dispatch a team of veterinary experts to diagnose the illness, treat the infected animals, and prevent further losses.

“This is a serious situation. We need veterinary doctors here at the earliest to assess the outbreak and save the remaining cattle,” Hajam added.
The Warwan region, known for its remote location and challenging terrain, often suffers delays in emergency responses. Locals have urged the administration to ensure swift action and provide necessary medical supplies and compensation for the losses.
Although the civilian authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident, a police team has visited the affected villages and met the families who have lost their cattles. (DD)
