Diplomat Correspondent

Leh, DD, The Department of Wildlife Protection, UT of Ladakh, successfully carried out a rescue and rehabilitation of a Red Fox from Spituk Farka, Leh.
On the evening of 1 June 2025, Range Office, Leh, Phunchok Wangtak received a report from Gonbo, a resident of Spituk village about an injured Red Fox which they spotted at Spituk Farka while going for some work.

He informed that the Red Fox seemed injured as it was limping while walking. Range Officer, Leh Punchok Wangtak and Rescue incharge Smanla Tsering, immediately headed to the site.
The team successfully rescued the injured Red Fox and immediately transported the animal to the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (WRRC), Leh.
A thorough medical examination was conducted by Dr. Diskit Yangzom (Veterinary Officer, WRRC Leh) revealed the animal was wounded at the shoulder and fore arm, a probable injury caused by barbed wire or a metal chain.

As the injury was old, the wound area was infected and infested by maggots. The animal was found to be underweight and in a weakened state.

The animal underwent proper treatment and care at WRRC, Leh which included necessary treatment, nutritional feeding, deworming and health monitoring every day. Rehabilitation was crucial for the animal for regaining strength, and to recover from stress and malnutrition.

The animal underwent treatment and rehabilitation for about a month. The wound completely healed and the animal attained sound health.

The Red Fox was then released into its own territory near Spituk Farka on 18th July, 2025 following all necessary protocols.DD
