Buzz Grows Around Possible Restoration of Statehood to Jammu & Kashmir

Omar Abdullah Hints at Calm, Sparks Speculation Ahead of August 5 Anniversary

Omar Abdullah Hints at Calm, Sparks Speculation Ahead of August 5 Anniversary

Diplomat Correspondent

Srinagar, (DD)With August 5—the day that marked the abrogation of Article 370—drawing near, political corridors in Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi are abuzz with speculation about a possible major announcement: the restoration of statehood to J&K.

Adding fuel to the fire, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took to social media today to temper expectations. “I’ve heard every possible permutation & combination about what to expect in J&K tomorrow… nothing bad will happen but unfortunately nothing positive will happen either,” he posted on X, while still expressing hope for a positive move “in this monsoon session of Parliament.”

Though Omar insists his view is purely based on “gut feeling” and denies any contact with officials in Delhi, political watchers say his tone suggests he’s either being cautious—or strategically cryptic.

Political Circles Abuzz

His post, coming just a day before the sixth anniversary of the Article 370 revocation, has only intensified speculation in political and media circles. Sources within both the opposition and ruling BJP say internal discussions on restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir have reached an advanced stage. Several leaders have privately indicated that a formal announcement could be made during the monsoon session, which concludes later this month.

An official from the Ministry of Home Affairs, requesting anonymity, said, “It’s not about if statehood will be restored—it’s about when and how. The Centre wants to ensure a smooth transition and proper groundwork before making anything official.”

Ground Sentiment: Hope Meets Skepticism

On the ground in Kashmir, the mood remains cautiously optimistic. Many residents see the restoration of statehood as a necessary step toward political empowerment and normalcy.

Local business leaders and youth activists have echoed similar sentiments. “It’s been six years, and we need political ownership and representation back,” said Aqib Lone, a young entrepreneur in Baramulla.

Opposition Cautious, BJP Silent

Opposition parties including, PDP have long demanded the full restoration of statehood, along with Article 370 and 35A. While most have remained guarded in their statements ahead of August 5, Omar Abdullah’s post is seen as both a signal to his support base and a subtle message to Delhi.

The BJP, on the other hand, has remained tight-lipped. Party insiders say discussions on J&K’s future are being held at the highest level, with Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah personally reviewing the political roadmap.

What Could Happen

If the buzz proves accurate, the Centre could announce:

Restoration of statehood (without Article 370 or 35A)

Announcement of a legislative assembly election date

Steps toward bifurcating Ladakh and J&K formally with administrative clarity

An economic and political revival package

Final Word: All Eyes on Delhi

As the sun sets on August 4, and the politically sensitive date of August 5 approaches, J&K is once again at the heart of India’s national discourse. Will this be the year the Centre finally restores statehood to the region? Or will it be another round of speculation without substance?

Only Delhi holds the answers—and perhaps, for now, Omar Abdullah’s “gut feeling” will have to do.
