Health threat alert: National lab finds unsafe levels of banned synthetic dyes in popular ready-to-eat dishes across Jammu and Kashmir.

Srinagar, (DD) In a strong move to protect public health, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has issued a stern warning against the use of prohibited synthetic food colours in ready-to-eat dishes such as Wazwan, Biryani, Chicken Tikka, Kebabs, and Pickles. Food operators violating the regulation could face imprisonment up to three months and a fine of Rs 3,00,000, the government warned in a public notice issued on Friday.
The warning follows recent findings from the National Food Laboratory, Ghaziabad, which revealed that several food samples tested—including Kabab, Biryani, and Chicken Tikka—were unsafe due to the presence of banned synthetic colours like Carmoisine, Tartrazine, and Erythrosine.
“In accordance with Regulation 3.1.2 and Appendix A of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011, synthetic food colours are strictly prohibited in meat-based ready-to-eat food items. The presence of these colours poses serious health risks, especially to vulnerable groups,” the notice stated.
Officials further cited Section 59 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, under which such violations are punishable by law, reinforcing the government’s commitment to upholding food safety standards in the region.
All Food Business Operators (FBOs)—including restaurants, street vendors, and food processors—have been advised to comply strictly and ensure only natural or approved additives are used in the preparation of food.
“This action is being taken in the interest of public health. We urge all stakeholders to cooperate in ensuring safe, hygienic, and law-compliant food reaches consumers,” the notice read.
