Srinagar, (DD)Acting on specific intelligence inputs, Srinagar Police, in coordination with the Food Safety Department, carried out a series of raids across the city, seizing large quantities of rotten meat and sealing a cold storage facility in Parimpora where the stock was found.

Officials said the action was part of an intensified drive to curb the sale of unsafe meat and protect public health.

According to a police spokesperson, joint teams from Srinagar Police and the Food Safety Department targeted vendors suspected of selling unhygienic and expired meat products. Substantial quantities of decomposed meat were seized and destroyed on the spot under provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act.

In one operation, police, along with officials from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), raided a cold storage unit in Parimpora where rotten meat was stored. The facility was sealed, and the stock seized in accordance with the law.

Similarly, acting on credible information at Police Station Zakoora, authorities identified Ab Hameed Kuchay, a resident of Soura and operator of Sunshine Foods at SICOP Zakoora, as a key suspect. He is alleged to have conspired with Arif Ahmad Shah of Baghat Barzulla to supply large quantities of decomposed meat to restaurants and hotels across Srinagar.

Police said the deliberate distribution of such unsafe meat poses a serious public health hazard and constitutes a grave offence. Accordingly, FIR No. 48/2025 has been registered at Police Station Zakoora under Sections 271, 275, and 61(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Investigation is ongoing.

Srinagar Police affirmed that inspections and legal action will continue in coordination with relevant departments to ensure strict compliance with food safety standards and accountability across the supply chain (DD)
