Jammu, (DD): Many fears dead after a massive cloudburst struck Chashoti in Kishtwar district this afternoon, triggering flash floods along the starting point of the revered Shree Machail Mata Yatra. Officials said rescue teams have been rushed to the spot, and visuals show pilgrims being evacuated to safety.
Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar Pankaj Kumar Sharma confirmed the incident, saying, “A flash flood has occurred at Chashoti area, which is the starting point of the Machail Mata Yatra. Rescue operations have been launched immediately.”
Union Minister and local MP Dr. Jitendra Singh said he spoke to the Deputy Commissioner soon after being alerted by Leader of Opposition and local MLA Sunil Kumar Sharma. “The massive cloudburst could result in substantial casualties. The administration has swung into action, rescue teams have moved to the site, and arrangements for damage assessment, rescue, and medical care are in place. My office is receiving regular updates, and all possible assistance will be provided,” he posted online.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. “Anguished by the cloudburst in Chashoti, Kishtwar. Condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for a quick recovery of the injured. Civil, Police, Army, NDRF, and SDRF teams have been directed to intensify rescue and relief efforts and ensure all possible assistance reaches the affected,” he said.
The Machail Mata Yatra, a major pilgrimage attracting thousands of devotees each year, has been disrupted, with the motorable road from Padder to Chashoti and the subsequent trek to the shrine impacted by the flash flood.(DD)
