Colleges Reopen in Leh After Two-Week Closure; LG Orders Gradual Lifting of Restrictions

Diplomat Correspondent

Leh,DD: Colleges in Leh district reopened on Wednesday following a two-week closure imposed after the September 24 unrest, officials said.

Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta chaired a security review meeting and directed the phased lifting of remaining restrictions to restore normalcy across the Union Territory.

Officials said that all colleges resumed operations on Wednesday morning, after being shut down since the violent agitation led by Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance demanding statehood and extension of Sixth Schedule safeguards for Ladakh.

The unrest had left four people dead and several injured. Schools up to class eight were reopened on October 3, followed by classes 9 to 12 as the situation improved. Mobile internet services remain suspended but are expected to be restored in the coming days.
Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) Act, restricting assembly of five or more persons, are likely to continue temporarily.

During the meeting, officials briefed the LG on the phased reopening of educational institutions, markets, and other public spaces. Expressing satisfaction over the gradual return of normalcy, Gupta commended the people of Ladakh for their cooperation and maturity in maintaining peace.
He directed authorities to continue the phased relaxation of restrictions while ensuring public safety and smooth resumption of economic and social activities. Gupta also appealed to citizens, particularly the youth, to remain vigilant and avoid actions that could disrupt peace, emphasizing that the progress of Ladakh depends on stability, unity, and communal harmony.
