Hunger for Change: Wangchuk among 20 fellow protesters detained in Delhi

Wangchuk Says Sad Day for Democracy

Arun Jasrotia

Udhampur:TDD,Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and 20 fellow protesters found their peaceful fast for Ladakh’s constitutional rights abruptly halted on Sunday as Delhi Police detained them outside Ladakh Bhawan in New Delhi. The group, which had journeyed from Leh to the capital, was advocating for Ladakh’s inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, a move that would grant the region greater autonomy.

Despite the protesters’ insistence on the peaceful nature of their sit-in, authorities deemed the gathering unauthorized.
Officials explained that while an application for a demonstration at Jantar Mantar was under review, no other locations had been approved for protest activities. The detained individuals were subsequently transported to Mandir Marg police station amid a heavy police presence.

Their demands extend beyond Sixth Schedule inclusion, encompassing calls for statehood, the establishment of a public service commission, and separate Lok Sabha constituencies for Leh and Kargil districts. These requests stem from growing concerns about governance and representation in Ladakh following its separation from Jammu and Kashmir in 2019.

Sonam wangchuk shared his Views on Twitter, formally Known as X and Called this Day A Sad Day for Democracy adding to it he wrote On 8th day of fast, 61 people doing a Moun Vrat on Ekadashi to SaveLadakh SaveHimalayas were forcibly detained.
We were told BNSS 163 (144) prohibitory orders were permanently applied in entire New Delhi district. This I think is against the spirit of the constitution of India aricle 19- freedom of speech & movement.
Firstly continuous application and 2nd is it ‘reasonable’ to use it on people fasting peacefully.TDD
