Nomination of five MLAs: Issue reaches SC as Congress MLC files case

I was the first to advocate that power to nominate 5 MLAs should lie with elected Govt not LG: Ravinder Sharma

TDD Correspondent
Srinagar, Oct 14 (TDD): In a significant development, senior Congress leader and former MLC Ravinder Sharma has filed the case before Supreme Court regarding the purported move of J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to nominate the five MLA to the J&K Legislative Assembly.
Talking to TDD exclusively from New Delhi, Sharma said that he was the first to challenge the move of nominating five MLAs by LG J&K. “My stand is clear that the power lies with the elected government to nominate the five MLAs not the LG. The case is listed before the Supreme Court today, lets see what happens,” Sharma said.
He said that from the day one when the news about the proposed move by the LG about nominating five MLAs into the J&K Assembly went viral, he took a stand on the issue and filed a case before the Supreme Court.
Earlier, National Conference that got a massive mandate from Kashmir by winning 42 seats in the recently concluded Assembly polls, said that they will approach the court if LG nominates the five MLAs. The party believes that the issues should be left to the elected government of J&K.
While NC swept Kashmir, Congress miserably failed in both regions of J&K by just bagging six seats. BJP dominated Jammu region by pocketing 29 seats. PDP also shrunk to just three seats.
Sources and media reports suggested that LG was mulling to nominate five MLAs to J&K Assembly, a move strongly opposed by the NC.—(TDD)
