Srinagar:DD, The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed heated exchanges on Monday after NC MLA Sajad Shaheen raised the issue of AAP MLA Mehraj Malik’s detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA).
Shaheen questioned the legality and justification of Malik’s PSA detention, terming it an “attack on democratic values.” Several opposition members supported his statement and demanded a clarification from the government.
However, BJP MLAs countered the remarks, arguing that “the Deputy Commissioner (DC) has the authority to impose PSA on anyone found violating the law,” adding that the matter falls “outside the government’s domain and should not be discussed in the House.”
The statement provoked strong protests from NC legislators, who insisted that “the DC is not the final authority to slap PSA” and called for a formal resolution to be passed condemning the action.
The debate soon escalated into chaos, with members from both sides trading accusations before the Speaker intervened. (KNC)
