JU Organizes Online Session to Commemorate International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women

Jammu:DD, The Centre for Women’s Studies organized an online session in collaboration with Centre for Women Development Studies, New Delhi on this year’s UN theme: “Unite to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls” today to commemorate the 16 days of activism by 16 Universities across India on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Prof. Savita Nayyar, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies was the resource person.

Prof. Nayyar, began the session by acknowledging the importance of such initiative and spoke on the theme: ‘Cyber Crimes against Women and Children: Issues, Challenges and Legal Safeguards’. In her presentation she highlighted the rapidly evolving landscape of online threats including cyber stalking, identity theft, online harassment, financial fraud, and misuse of social media platforms. She explained how women and children are particularly vulnerable to such crimes due to increased digital exposure and lack of awareness.

Further, Prof. Nayyar also discussed the legal provisions available under Information Technology Act, Criminal laws, various schemes and initiatives taken by the government for prevention of cyber crimes, punishments of offenders and rederessal of grievances of victims.
She also suggested various preventive measures that users must adopt, and highlighted the role of parents, educators, and institutions in ensuring digital safety.
Her session not only informed participants about emerging challenges, but also empowered them with practical tools, safety strategies, and responsible digital practices. Her presentation was widely appreciated for its relevance, depth, and its strong emphasis on creating a safer online environment for all.

Earlier Dr. Saranjit Kaur, faculty, Centre for Women’s Studies welcomed all the participants and thanked the Centre for Women’s Development Studies, New Delhi and Prof. Manimekalai for taking the initiative and providing the opportunity to the Centre to be the part of this program.

Later, Dr. Kaur also shared her views by sharing her research findings and few case studies of domestic violence perpetuated against women in various forms through technology i.e. like Face book, Instagram, Whatsapp etc in the Jammu district.

Large number of participants across India, as well as from University of Jammu very enthusiastically participated in the program. Dr. Saranjit Kaur, Faculty member, Centre for Women’s Studies coordinated and conducted the workshop and also presented the formal vote of thanks.DD
