Jammu: The Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu Centre today celebrated Energy Conservation Day at Institutional Complex, Channi Himmat.
The function was attended by Engineers from various Departments, Organizations and Senior Engineers along with Members of the Committee of IEI, Jammu Local Centre.
On this occasion, G P Singh, IAS, Managing Director, Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd., Power Development Department, J&K Govt was the chief guest whereas Er. Anil Verma, FIE; Chairman, IEI Jammu Centre presided over the function.
At the outset, Er Anil Verma, FIE; Chairman in his Welcome Address spoke about the importance of this day mooted by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency in 1991 and exhorted upon all stakeholders to use this essential commodity judiciously in view of growing energy demand in the country.
He advocated for adoption of Renewable Energy means to meet the power demand and suggested installation of Solar Roof Tops under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. It will result in a big way in saving the environment from burning of coal & gas for generation of electricity.
It was followed by Keynote Address by Dr. Sanjeev Anand, Associate Professor, School of Energy Management, SMVDU on “Indoor Air Quality Assessment and its improvement using HVAC Systems” and Dr. Yatheshth Anand, Associate Professor, School of Mechanical Engineering, SMVDU on “Low – Cost and sustainable solutions for energy efficiency in buildings”.
Later, Er. Sanjeev Rohmetra, Nodal Officer for PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana for JPDCL spoke about Integration of renewable energy through solar in our energy ecosystem.
He dwelt at length about Solar integration which is a straight‑up conservation play by way of cutting demand as every kWh generated on‑site is a kWh you don’t have to pull from coal or gas. Further, it helps in Peak‑shaving as mid‑day sun coincides with India’s highest load; feeding that power back to the grid trims peak‑coal plants.
Meanwhile, G P Singh, IAS; Managing Director, Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd. said that this day reminds us that energy is not merely a commodity—it is a national asset, a driver of development, and a responsibility we hold in trust for future generations. Energy conservation is no longer optional, no longer advisory—it is an economic, environmental, and administrative necessity.
He further said that India is among the fastest-growing economies in the world, and J&K is steadily progressing on the path of growth and infrastructure development.
However, with growth comes increased demand for electricity and energy conservation by way of smart usage is the only way forward. It will help J&K UT to reduce dependence on costly power purchases.
He also was clear in saying that no reform can succeed without public participation. Power theft, misuse and wastage are not just violations of law—they are acts against society. Every unit of electricity wasted today increases the burden on honest Consumers tomorrow.
Er. Avneet Gupta, MIE; honorary secretary, while presenting vote of thanks. He also thanked the media personnel for their coverage of the function.DD
