Nitish Kumar’s Act an Assault on India’s Diversity and Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb: NC

Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Provincial President Jammu, Ratan Lal Gupta, today strongly condemned the shocking and insensitive act of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who was seen pulling the veil of a Muslim woman during a government function while distributing certificates.

Ratan Lal Gupta termed this act as a direct attack on India’s composite culture, diversity and the spirit of “Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb” that has defined the nation for centuries.

Gupta said that such behaviour from a person holding a constitutional post is highly objectionable, unbecoming and unacceptable.
“Bihar is a diverse state with people from different religions, cultures and traditions. The Chief Minister is expected to uphold constitutional values and respect the dignity, faith and personal choices of every citizen. What Nitish Kumar did reflects arrogance and a complete disregard for constitutional morality,” he asserted.

The NC leader further said that the incident also exposes the double standards of the BJP, as Nitish Kumar is a key constituent of the NDA, yet the BJP has maintained a conspicuous silence on this shameful act.
“This silence speaks volumes. It proves that the BJP tacitly endorses such actions, which target minorities and undermine India’s pluralistic ethos,” Gupta said.
He warned that such incidents damage India’s image globally, portraying the country as intolerant and insensitive towards minorities.

“At a time when India claims to be the world’s largest democracy, such actions send a negative message across the world,” he added.

Ratan Lal Gupta demanded that Nitish Kumar immediately apologise to the nation and assured that he refrains from repeating such conduct in the future.
He emphasized that any behaviour that goes against the spirit of the constitution, equality, and mutual respect must be condemned unequivocally, irrespective of political affiliations.
