Kishtwar: The National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit of Government Degree College, Kishtwar, on Day 6 of the ongoing seven-day NSS Winter Camp, organised an educational visit to the local police station to promote legal literacy and awareness about modern policing among student volunteers. The visit was conducted under the mentorship of Principal Prof. Basharat Iqbal and was led by NSS Programme Officer Prof. Esarul Ayub.
During the visit, police officials delivered an extensive session on India’s newly enacted criminal laws—namely the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam BSA—which have replaced the colonial-era legal framework. The officers explained the significance of these reforms, particularly in addressing contemporary challenges such as cybercrime and the growing importance of digital and forensic evidence in investigations.
The volunteers were also given practical insights into the day-to-day functioning of a police station, including the registration of FIRs and Zero FIRs, maintenance of the Daily Diary, and the role of the Malkhana in safeguarding case property and evidence. The interaction helped demystify police procedures and strengthened the students’ understanding of the justice delivery system.
A special interactive session was conducted by the Women’s Wing of the police station for girl volunteers, focusing on issues such as domestic violence, cyberstalking, and the legal protections available to women under the new laws. Students were also made aware of their fundamental rights during police interactions, including the right to be informed of the grounds of arrest and the right to legal aid.
An engaging question-and-answer session allowed volunteers to clarify doubts and overcome misconceptions regarding police work, thereby fostering a more citizen-friendly image of law enforcement agencies. The programme concluded with appreciation extended to the police officials for their cooperation and commitment to youth engagement, making the visit both informative and empowering for the NSS volunteers.DD
