Nagrota :TDD,The Centre of Excellence for Road Safety (CoERS) at IIT Madras, a leading institution dedicated to road safety research and advocacy, conducted a hands-on workshop at NCC Training Academy Nagrota. This crucial initiative, led by a distinguished team comprising Col Sanjiv Sharma (Retd), Himani Suri, Allan Winston, and Samuel Sathiyanathan, aimed to raise awareness and promote a culture of safe driving among cadets, laying the foundation for life-saving habits. The event unfolded with palpable energy as NCC cadets absorbed the insights shared by the CoERS team. The session underscored the dire consequences of road accidents, emphasizing that every day, countless lives are lost due to preventable crashes. The CoERS team highlighted that road safety goes beyond mere awareness; it is a collective responsibility that requires every individual to make cautious, informed decisions. “It’s not just about protecting ourselves but about protecting others as well. CoERS leverages cutting-edge research methodologies, such as GIS analysis and behavioral studies, to develop data-driven interventions that address critical road safety challenges. During the visit, the team shared practical safety tips and engaged cadets in interactive discussions about real-world scenarios, emphasizing the importance of patience, attentiveness, and defensive driving. They presented thought-provoking statistics, demonstrating how a single moment of carelessness on the road could lead to catastrophic consequences, not just for the driver but for families and communities. One of the key highlights of the event was a hands-on session on understanding road safety audits and best practices. Himani Suri emphasized the importance of infrastructure planning and behavioral change, while Allan Winston spoke on how adopting simple safety measures, like wearing seat belts and adhering to speed limits, can significantly reduce accident risks. Samuel Sathiyanathan inspired cadets by sharing success stories of regions where strategic interventions led to a tangible decrease in road-related fatalities. The CoERS team’s visit concluded with an inspiring call to action: Every road user must act responsibly, making choices that protect lives. “Drive with caution and let patience lead the way,” Suri urged, reminding cadets that creating safer roads requires proactive measures and continuous education. The collaboration between CoERS and NCC represents a powerful effort to instill road safety values in young cadets. By fostering a sense of accountability and respect for traffic rules, this initiative aspires to pave the way for safer road networks across India, ensuring that the next generation drives with awareness and responsibility.
