Cyber Police Kashmir Cracks Rs 21 Lakh Digital Scam, 3 Arrested

Srinagar, (TDD): In a swift and successful operation, the Cyber Police Station Kashmir Zone has cracked a digital fraud case worth Rs 21 lakh, arresting three individuals and recovering Rs 4.13 lakh from the culprits.

The scam came to light when a senior citizen from Srinagar filed a complaint, claiming he had been defrauded by scammers who impersonated officials from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). According to the police, the fraudsters accused the victim of being involved in a fabricated money laundering case amounting to ₹6.8 crores. They issued fake arrest warrants and penalties, and using psychological manipulation, pressured the victim to transfer ₹21 lakh into a fraudulent HDFC Bank account.

According to SSP Srinagar, Imtiyaz Ahmed, the scammers falsely assured the victim of a refund and instructed him to lock his house and avoid communicating with others during the process. Under immense pressure, the victim prematurely closed his fixed deposits and transferred the money.

Upon receiving the complaint, the Cyber Police registered FIR No. 26/2024 and launched a fast-paced investigation using advanced technical tools. Police teams were sent to Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Punjab, leading to the arrest of Gaurav Kumar from Shamli (UP), Gurpreet Singh, and Ujjawal Chauhan, both from Patiala (Punjab).

During the raids, the police seized 4 mobile phones, a MacBook, 13 SIM cards, 24 debit cards, 20 cheque books, 10 passbooks, and other incriminating materials.

“Rs 4.13 lakh has already been recovered and transferred back to the victim’s account,” said a police spokesperson. The arrested individuals are facing charges of fraud, conspiracy, and coercion. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to uncover the full extent of the scam and dismantle the larger network behind it.

The Cyber Police Kashmir Zone has issued an advisory urging the public to exercise caution when sharing sensitive financial information. They emphasized that legitimate government agencies will never conduct investigations or arrests via video calls, nor will they demand payments or request sensitive data over the phone.

Citizens are advised to verify the identity of callers claiming to represent official authorities and to report any suspicious activities to the nearest Cyber Police station or cybercrime helplines immediately. The Cyber Police Kashmir Zone remains committed to safeguarding citizens from the growing threat of cybercrime and urges everyone to stay vigilant.(TDD)
