Srinagar, TDD, Sehar Shabir’s remarkable transformation from an MBA graduate to a master baker is a story of reinvention, passion and resilience.
A native of Srinagar, Sehar always had an eye for creativity, but it wasn’t until she found herself immersed in the world of baking that she discovered her true calling.
Though she had earned an MBA, which many saw as the ticket to a conventional corporate career, Sehar took a bold step toward something different.
“It wasn’t an easy decision,” Sehar told the Diplomat. “There was a lot of pressure to stay within the traditional boundaries of my degree. But baking was where my heart was. I realized that the most important thing in life is to pursue what makes you feel alive, and for me, that was the kitchen.”
What began as a personal hobby soon turned into a flourishing business. Sehar founded her own bakery, blending her love for traditional Kashmiri ingredients with modern baking techniques. Her cakes, pastries and bread became known for their distinct flavors, using locally sourced, fresh produce. She credits her success to the ability to fuse her understanding of business with her newfound baking expertise.
“I started with small batches, experimenting with recipes and creating products that not only tasted good but told a story,” she says. “What excites me the most is experimenting with local flavors, like saffron, dried fruits, and nuts, and incorporating them into the baked goods people love. It’s my way of honoring the rich culinary heritage of Kashmir while giving it a contemporary twist.”
However, her journey wasn’t without hurdles. Coming from a family where higher education in business was encouraged, Sehar had to navigate societal expectations, which often prioritize conventional careers over creative passions. “There were definitely moments of doubt,” she admits. “Many people didn’t understand why I was leaving a ‘secure’ path to take on something that seemed uncertain. But I kept pushing forward because I knew I had something special to offer.”
Sehar’s business now offers a range of artisanal baked goods, from traditional walnut cakes to intricately decorated custom cakes, drawing in a loyal clientele. Her emphasis on quality and creativity has set her apart in Srinagar’s competitive food industry, where she is not just a baker but an advocate for the local food movement.
“Through my bakery, I want to promote Kashmiri ingredients and traditions, making them accessible to people in new forms,” she says. “It’s not just about selling baked goods; it’s about sharing a piece of our culture with the world, and that’s something that truly drives me.”
In addition to her bakery’s success, Sehar has contributed to the local economy by hiring a team of local workers and offering workshops to aspiring bakers, ensuring that her journey fosters a sense of community and growth.
Sehar’s story stands as a powerful reminder that success doesn’t always follow a linear path. By following her passion, Sehar Shabir has redefined what it means to succeed, proving that a leap of faith can lead to deliciously rewarding results. TDD
