CM Omar calls for a thorough debate on ‘One Nation, One Election,’ in Parliament

Says will convey party stand to NC MPs, Reaffirms commitment to Darbar Move tradition

Jammu, TDD,Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today called for a comprehensive and transparent discussion in Parliament on the contentious proposal of ‘One Nation, One Election.’

Speaking to reporters in Jammu, he cautioned against hastily implementing the concept, drawing parallels to the abrupt abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. Abdullah stressed that any decision on this matter should be well-informed, inclusive, and thoroughly debated to ensure it aligns with the democratic ethos of the country.

“The idea of ‘One Nation, One Election’ should not be pushed through in haste. It requires a threadbare discussion in Parliament, unlike the unilateral abrogation of Article 370. We will sit together and convey our party’s stand on this issue to our Members of Parliament,” Abdullah said.

On the topic of the Darbar Move, a long-standing tradition of shifting the administrative capital between Srinagar and Jammu biannually, Abdullah reaffirmed his government’s commitment to restoring the practice. He criticized the BJP-led government for abandoning the historic tradition, calling it a “wrong” that the National Conference is determined to correct.

“The Darbar Move will take place as scheduled. We are in the process of framing new business rules to ensure its smooth functioning,” Abdullah stated. “Let’s wait a bit; we have a mandate of five years, not five months or just one month. This government is committed to serving the people of Jammu and Kashmir in a balanced manner, respecting its unique traditions.”

The Chief Minister’s remarks reflect his party’s stance on both upholding democratic deliberations on national issues and preserving the cultural and administrative legacy of Jammu and Kashmir. His comments also signal the NC’s intent to counter the BJP’s policies while prioritizing the welfare and inclusivity of J&K (TDD)
