One Nation, One Election a Step Forward If It Ensures Fiscal Savings: Satish Sharma”

The Diplomat Desk

Jammu, (TDD): Cabinet Minister in Jammu and Kashmir, Satish Sharma today offered a cautiously optimistic perspective on the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, stating that it was a step forward if it could lead to significant fiscal savings for the country.

Talking to reporters in Udhampur, Sharma said the need for careful examination of the draft bill before forming a conclusive stance.

“I haven’t thoroughly studied the draft yet, but if this initiative helps save taxpayers’ money and the country’s valuable resources, it would certainly be a step in the right direction,” Sharma stated, adopting a pragmatic view on the proposal.

The Cabinet Minister further clarified that discussions must take place with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to develop a collective and informed position on the matter. His remarks reflected awareness of the broader implications of the proposal, both politically and logistically.

Sharma noted that India successfully conducted simultaneous elections during the post-independence period, which helped streamline electoral processes and reduce financial strain. He also pointed to Europe, where similar electoral systems are in practice, further underscoring that concurrent elections are not an untested idea.

Sharma reiterated his core stance: if ‘One Nation, One Election’ results in meaningful savings for taxpayers and resources, it deserves serious consideration. He emphasized that responsible governance requires fiscal prudence, efficiency, and policies that prioritize the country’s economic well-being.

While Sharma refrained from delivering a definitive verdict on the proposal, his remarks reflected a willingness to engage in further dialogue and scrutiny of the bill. (TDD)
