Police scuttles J&K Congress protest for Statehood restoration, Rajbhawan Ghearao in Jammu

Jammu, (TDD) The Jammu and Kashmir Congress party staged a protest in Jammu today demanding the restoration of the statehood, which was revoked by the central government in 2019.

The protest, intended as a “Rajbhawan Gherao,” was aimed at drawing attention to the prolonged delay in restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s special status following the abrogation of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution.

Congress leaders, including MLAs and party workers, gathered in large numbers on Residency Road, gearing up to march towards the Rajbhawan (the residence of the Lieutenant Governor). However, their plans were quickly thwarted by a heavy police presence, which blocked their path and prevented them from proceeding further towards the Rajbhawan.

Talking to reporters, after the protest was stopped, J&K Congress chief Tariq Hameed Karra expressed his disappointment, stating that the protest was aimed at highlighting the continued delay in restoring the region’s statehood. “We were not allowed to march towards Raj Bhawan, and therefore, we have called off our protest here only, at Residency Road,” Karra stated. He underscored that the Congress party would continue to press for the restoration of J&K’s statehood, a matter that remains a significant point of contention in the region.

The protest comes at a time when political groups across Jammu and Kashmir are growing increasingly vocal in their demand for the reversal of the 2019 decision. Several parties, including the National Conference (NC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Congress, continue to advocate for the restoration of the region’s political autonomy, calling for the return of statehood and the protection of the rights of its people.

With tensions surrounding the issue continuing to simmer, today’s protest marks yet another chapter in the ongoing struggle for Jammu and Kashmir’s political future.(TDD)
