Srinagar,(TDD): Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today assured artisans and traders that there would be no hike in GST on Kashmiri shawls, a vital part of the region’s handicraft heritage.

He revealed that timely intervention during pre-budget discussions prevented such a proposal from advancing.

Speaking to reporters in Jaisalmer, Omar said, “There were speculations about a GST hike on shawls, and we were prepared to stop it. Thankfully, the proposal wasn’t taken up and we will ensure it is not considered in the future.”

The Kashmiri shawl industry, particularly known for its intricate Pashmina craftsmanship, has been facing multiple challenges, including rising costs and competition from machine-made imitations. A GST hike would have further jeopardized the livelihoods of artisans who depend on this traditional craft.

Omar said the importance of protecting Kashmir’s handicrafts, not just as an economic driver but as a symbol of the Valley’s identity. “The shawl industry is more than just business; it represents our cultural soul. We must protect the artisans and promote this centuries-old tradition,” he added.

He further called for comprehensive policies to address the challenges faced by the handicraft sector and ensure its sustainability (TDD)
