Srinagar, TDD,As sub-zero temperatures grip the Kashmir Valley, the festive spirit of Christmas has brought warmth and joy to residents and visitors alike.

From the lively markets of Srinagar to the snow-covered slopes of Gulmarg and Pahalgam, preparations for the holiday season are in full swing. Families and tourists are thronging local shops for Christmas decorations, cakes, and gifts. “Despite the freezing cold, the joy of Christmas fills the air,” said Zahoor Ahmad, a shopkeeper in Srinagar’s Lal Chowk. “It’s heartwarming to see people of all backgrounds celebrating together.”

The Holy Family Catholic Church in Srinagar is the focal point of Christmas celebrations. Adorned with sparkling lights, stars, and wreaths, the church is set to host midnight Mass. “This season reminds us of hope and unity,” said Father Roy Mathew, the parish priest. “The turnout this year has been incredible, despite the harsh weather.”

Tourist hubs such as Gulmarg and Pahalgam are drawing crowds for a quintessential white Christmas. Hotels and resorts have organized festive events featuring bonfires, Kashmiri music, and traditional feasts. “Kashmir during Christmas feels like stepping into a winter wonderland,” shared Rebecca Sharma, a tourist from Delhi.

Locals, too, are embracing the celebrations with enthusiasm, blending traditional Kashmiri hospitality with the Christmas spirit. “We are lighting candles, decorating trees, and savoring the festive vibes,” said Nazir Dar, a resident of Gulmarg.

Even as Srinagar records a bone-chilling -3.6°C and Gulmarg dips to -4.8°C, the cold hasn’t dampened the festive mood. “The chill adds a magical touch to the celebrations,” said Anita D’Souza, a tourist from Mumbai. “Playing in the snow and enjoying Christmas here is unforgettable.”

Local businesses have also joined in, offering Christmas-themed menus and events. Bakeries in Pahalgam are serving festive treats, while Srinagar’s cafes offer steaming beverages to keep visitors warm.

“Christmas transcends religion—it’s about love and togetherness,” said Shazia Khan, a Srinagar resident. “In these challenging times, the joy of the season unites us all.”

With twinkling lights, snow-covered landscapes, and the warmth of community, Kashmir is celebrating a magical Christmas, bringing smiles and festive cheer to everyone braving the winter chill. (TDD)
