Srinagar, (TDD) The Srinagar Police have made significant strides in combating the growing menace of drug trafficking in 2024, registering 94 cases and seizing drugs worth crores of rupees in a series of operations. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Imtiyaz Hussain, disclosed the details during a press conference on Tuesday, highlighting the police’s efforts to dismantle organized drug networks in the district.

SSP Hussain revealed that 126 individuals have been detained under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, with 26 offenders booked under the stringent Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act. “The seizure of large quantities of drugs, including heroin, charas, and brown sugar, marks a significant step forward in our fight against narcotics,” he said.

Hussain acknowledged that while terrorism remains a concern, drug trafficking has emerged as a major challenge for law enforcement. “The drug menace is not just a law-and-order issue but a threat to our social fabric. Curbing it requires a multi-pronged approach involving enforcement, public awareness, and community participation,” he stated.

The SSP urged parents, educators, and civil society to actively engage in raising awareness about the dangers of drug addiction, particularly among the youth. He emphasized that public cooperation is crucial to achieving long-term success in the fight against drugs.

The Srinagar Police have ramped up their operations by intensifying surveillance, identifying drug trafficking hotspots, and conducting awareness campaigns to educate the public. SSP Hussain reaffirmed the police department’s commitment to creating a drug-free Srinagar and urged citizens to report any suspicious activities related to narcotics. (TDD)
