Srinagar plunges to -7.3°C as Kashmir freezes; Dal Lake, taps turn to Ice

Numbing cold wave cripples daily life across Kashmir, Ladakh’

Srinagar, TDD,Srinagar recorded a bone-chilling -7.3°C last night, one of the coldest temperatures of the season, as an intense cold wave swept across Kashmir Valley and Ladakh.

The freezing temperatures turned parts of the iconic Dal Lake into sheets of ice and left household water taps frozen, compounding the struggles of residents.

Pulwama and Shopian bore the brunt of the cold, with mercury levels plunging to -9.1°C. Ladakh’s Leh was even colder, registering a frigid -12.6°C, while other districts in the valley saw extreme sub-zero temperatures—Budgam at -7.8°C, Bandipora at -7.2°C, Sonamarg at -7.5°C, and Larnoo at -8.6°C.

In contrast, the Jammu region experienced relatively milder conditions, with Jammu city recording 7.1°C. However, colder pockets like Padder (-9.5°C), Banihal (-1.3°C), and Kishtwar (0.5°C) showed significant drops, highlighting the stark difference within the union territory.

The freezing conditions have disrupted daily life, with frost-covered mornings, biting winds, and frozen water sources making survival increasingly difficult. With no signs of immediate relief, the region braces for even harsher winter days ahead. (TDD)
