Srinagar, (TDD): The first significant snowfall of the season in Srinagar on Friday has caused widespread disruptions at Srinagar International Airport, leading to delays in all flights. Heavy snow and reduced visibility have grounded both incoming and outgoing flights, leaving numerous passengers stranded.
Airport authorities have cited snow accumulation on the runway and dense cloud cover as the primary reasons for the delays. “Passenger and crew safety is our utmost priority. Our teams are working tirelessly to clear the runway and restore operations, but everything is contingent on the weather,” an airport spokesperson stated.
The delays have caused frustration among travelers, though some found solace in the beauty of the snow. “I was excited to return home to Delhi for the New Year, but now my flight is delayed indefinitely. Still, it’s hard to stay upset when the Valley looks so enchanting in the snow,” said Meenakshi Sharma, a passenger stranded at the airport.
For tourists, the snowfall is both a blessing and a challenge. While many had hoped for the snowy winter experience, the delayed flights have created uncertainty for their travel plans. “We came here specifically for the snow, and now we’re witnessing it. But our return flight is another matter,” said Arjun Singh, a tourist from Mumbai.
The snowfall has also affected road travel, with the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway partially closed due to slippery conditions. Authorities have urged travelers to stay updated on weather and road conditions before embarking on any journeys.
The Meteorological Department has predicted more snow in the next 24 hours, particularly in the higher altitudes, which may further delay air travel. Travelers are advised to monitor airline updates and consider alternate plans if needed.
Despite the operational disruptions, the snowfall has sparked a sense of joy among locals. “Snowfall is an integral part of life here in Kashmir. While it brings delays, it also adds to the charm of the region and reminds us of the natural beauty we’re lucky to have,” said Farooq Ahmad, a resident of Srinagar.
With ongoing efforts to clear the runway and resume flight operations, both passengers and airport officials are hoping for a break in the weather to bring the situation back to normal. (TDD)
