Severe snowfall triggers widespread power outage in Kashmir; CM Omar promises quick restoration

TDD Correspondent
Srinagar, (TDD): Kashmir is currently facing a major power outage following heavy snowfall, with 41 feeders at the 33 KV level and 739 feeders at the 11 KV level rendered inoperative. The disruption has left many areas without electricity, affecting daily life, especially in residential areas and businesses reliant on a constant power supply.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took to social media to update the public, stating that restoration work is actively underway. He assured that over 90% of the affected feeders would be operational by evening. Omar clarified that none of the high-voltage feeders (132 KV and 220 KV levels) were impacted, preventing a more widespread blackout.

“The restoration work is progressing, and we expect most feeders to be up and running by this evening,” Omar wrote in his post on X (formerly Twitter). He also mentioned his continuous communication with the Power Development Department (PDD) to monitor the situation closely and expedite repairs.

The snowstorm, which has caused severe disruption, poses particular challenges due to harsh weather conditions in some parts of the valley. Despite this, PDD teams are working tirelessly around the clock to restore power. The snowfall has also increased electricity demand, as residents rely heavily on power for heating during the ongoing winter season.

While the immediate restoration plans offer hope, concerns about frequent outages have resurfaced. Local residents and experts have called for long-term improvements to Kashmir’s power infrastructure to reduce vulnerabilities during severe weather events.

The administration’s efforts to restore normalcy are being closely followed, with authorities hopeful that power will be fully restored to most areas soon, providing much-needed relief during the harsh winter months.(TDD)
