Vultures take refuge in Udhampur hills as cold wave, fog sweep plains

Arun Jasrotia

Udhampur, (TDD):A captivating sight unfolded in the Samroli area Udhampur along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, where vultures were spotted amidst the ongoing cold wave that is sweeping across the northern plains.

This unexpected occurrence drew the attention of wildlife officials and experts, who view it as an encouraging sign of the area’s ecological health and biodiversity.

The vultures’ migration into the relatively warmer hilly areas during the severe winter months is part of their well-known survival strategy. Wildlife experts explain that these scavengers instinctively navigate towards areas with more favorable conditions to avoid the harsh cold of the plains. The hilly terrains of Udhampur, with their milder climate and unique geographical features, provide the ideal temporary refuge for these majestic birds. This annual migration has been observed for several years, highlighting a natural and predictable pattern as part of their seasonal behavior.

Mahesh Abrol, the Wildlife Range Officer of Udhampur, elaborated on this phenomenon, stating, “This is a yearly occurrence. When the temperature in the plains drops significantly, vultures tend to migrate to the hills.” He further emphasized that the vultures’ presence in the region serves as a vital biological indicator, reflecting the strength and stability of the local ecosystem. Their arrival not only enriches the biodiversity of the area but also underscores the ecological health of the region, offering a glimpse of how well the environment is sustaining its wildlife.

The vultures’ migration also has important implications for conservation. Their presence in Udhampur acts as a reminder of the critical need to protect and preserve natural habitats. As scavengers, vultures play an essential role in maintaining ecological balance by cleaning up carcasses and preventing the spread of disease. Their migration pattern serves as a stark reminder of how interconnected wildlife and habitat health are, and how sensitive ecosystems are to environmental changes. This serves as an important call to action for continued efforts in wildlife conservation and habitat protection.

The sighting of these vultures not only provides a spectacular visual for local residents but also highlights the importance of mindful environmental stewardship. As climate patterns continue to evolve, it is essential to ensure the preservation of habitats that support such vital wildlife movements, maintaining the delicate ecological balance that sustains the district’s biodiversity.(TDD)
