Srinagar, (TDD)Jammu and Kashmir has experienced a tourism surge in 2024, with a record 3 million visitors, marking a 10% increase from the previous year. This milestone reflects the region’s growing appeal among both domestic and international tourists, driven by a combination of government efforts, improved infrastructure, and an enhanced focus on showcasing the region’s natural beauty and cultural richness.
Raja Yaqoob, Director of Tourism, expressed pride in the achievement, emphasizing that the 10% growth is a testament to the ongoing development of the sector. “Our aim has always been to offer visitors not just picturesque landscapes, but a safe and enriching experience that reflects the true spirit of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
Foreign Tourists Flock to the Valley
A significant highlight in 2024 was the increase in foreign tourist arrivals, signaling the region’s growing international appeal. Tourists from around the world were drawn to Jammu and Kashmir’s scenic valleys, serene lakes, snow-capped peaks, and rich cultural heritage. The region’s unique handicrafts and vibrant festivals also contributed to the growing number of international visitors.
Top Destinations and Activities
Popular destinations such as Srinagar’s Dal Lake, the scenic meadows of Pahalgam, and the iconic ski slopes of Gulmarg remained top choices for travelers. The Vaishno Devi Shrine, a major pilgrimage destination, also played a pivotal role in boosting tourism in the Jammu region.
Adventure seekers were attracted by trekking, rafting, and skiing, particularly in Gulmarg, which continues to be regarded as one of Asia’s best ski resorts. Festivals like the Tulip and Saffron festivals further enriched the tourism experience, celebrating the region’s diverse culture and vibrant colors.
Boosting Local Economies
The tourism boom has had a positive economic impact on local businesses. Hotels, houseboats, artisans, and tour guides saw a surge in demand, while rural communities, previously untouched by mainstream tourism, have benefitted from new initiatives promoting village and homestay tourism. Local craftsmen, known for their Pashmina shawls and traditional handicrafts, also reported increased sales as visitors sought authentic Kashmiri souvenirs.
Government Efforts and Future Plans
The government’s focus on improving connectivity has been crucial in attracting more tourists. Investments in upgrading infrastructure, such as better highways and direct flights to Srinagar from major cities, have made the region more accessible. Moreover, promotional campaigns targeting both domestic and international markets have showcased the diversity of the region’s offerings.
Looking forward, the government plans to continue its emphasis on sustainable tourism to protect Jammu and Kashmir’s pristine landscapes and cultural heritage. “Our vision is not only to increase tourist numbers but to enhance their experiences while preserving the region’s unique environment and culture,” said Yaqoob.
