Srinagar, (TDD) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today criticized the dual power structure in the Union Territory, calling it ineffective and detrimental to governance.

Speaking during an interaction with the media at SKICC, he also stressed the need for restoring statehood, improving power infrastructure, and addressing public concerns over developmental projects.

Dual Power Structure: Not in Anyone’s Interest

Omar Abdullah described the dual governance model, which divides authority between the elected government and the Raj Bhawan, as inefficient. “If this system was effective, it would have been implemented across the country,” he stated.
He added that his government is working to finalize business rules that would streamline governance. “We are defining the boundaries of authority between the elected government and the Raj Bhawan to ensure clarity,” he explained.

Statehood Restoration: A Lingering Promise

The Chief Minister expressed discontent over the delay in restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. “It has been a year since the Centre promised to restore statehood. A year is enough to fulfill a promise made as ‘soon as possible,’” he remarked, urging the central government to honor its commitment.

Legacy of Sheikh Abdullah: A Daily Reminder

Responding to controversy over the exclusion of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah and Martyrs’ Day from the 2025 holiday calendar, Omar Abdullah remarked, “This did become a significant issue. However, Sheikh Abdullah and the martyrs live on every day through their legacy and contributions to this land.”

Power Supply: Significant Improvements made

Omar praised his administration’s efforts in improving the region’s power supply. “We are currently providing between 1,700 and 1,800 MWs, which is better than previous years. This will further improve as our own power projects come into full operation,” he assured.

Development Challenges: Railway Line and NIT Pulwama

On the proposed railway line in South Kashmir, which has raised concerns over its impact on agricultural land, Omar Abdullah said, “The concerns of the people will be taken into account, and necessary adjustments will be made.”
He also addressed opposition to the establishment of an NIT in Pulwama. “If the people of the district are against it, the government will consider shifting the project to another location,” he said.

Commitment to Manifesto Promises

Reiterating his administration’s focus on fulfilling election promises, Omar highlighted achievements such as the reversal of the academic session to November-December. “We are delivering on our commitments without delay,” he said confidently (TDD)
