Srinagar, (DD): The idyllic town of Sonamarg in Central Kashmir has been adorned with flags and decorations as it awaits the grand inauguration of the Z-Morh Tunnel by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
This landmark infrastructure project, which spans 6.5 km between Gagangeer and Sonamarg, is set to transform connectivity and boost tourism in the region.
The Z-Morh Tunnel is expected to provide all-weather access to Sonamarg, a destination often cut off during harsh winters. By reducing the travel time to just 20-25 minutes, the tunnel ensures year-round accessibility, paving the way for enhanced tourism and economic growth.
“This project is a blessing for us,” said Zahoor Ahmad, a shopkeeper in Sonamarg. “For years, winter closures have hampered our livelihoods. Now, we are hopeful that steady tourist traffic will bring prosperity to the region.”
Jahan Ara, a teacher from Ganderbal, echoed similar sentiments. “The tunnel will make life easier for residents by improving access to essential services like schools and hospitals, even in the toughest weather conditions.”
The tunnel is also a vital link to the under-construction Zojila Tunnel, which will further strengthen connectivity to Ladakh. Local entrepreneurs and experts believe this dual connectivity will position Sonamarg as a major year-round tourist destination, benefiting the local economy through job creation and increased business opportunities.
“This is not just a tunnel—it’s a lifeline for the people of this region,” said Wahid Reshi, a hotel owner. “The steady flow of visitors will completely change the tourism landscape here.”
As anticipation builds for today’s historic event, Sonamarg stands as a symbol of progress, showcasing the potential of infrastructure to unlock economic and social opportunities for the people of Jammu and Kashmir(TDD)
